Local pro Ben Murphy admits his remarkable 57 at Peninsula Kingswood on the weekend “kind of just felt like another round”.

Speaking to hosts Tiffany Cherry and Mark Allen on the Australian Golf Show Podcast, Murphy detailed how a slow start left him with little expectation.

“I didn’t really think much of it to be honest, thought 'oh yeah just another round', and then the birdies started to flow, and we made it through the turn, and I said to the boys 'I think I’m going alright'.

“I had absolutely no idea how low I was until I finished, and the boys said 'you just shot 57', and I thought they were lying, I was like 'surely not, no way', but yeah, turns out, 57.”

Murphy shot an eagle and three birdies over his last four holes to finish the remarkable round, and said the nerves only kicked in late in the day.

“Not until I had about a one-foot putt left for birdie on my last hole and I thought this will be pretty low, it will be my lowest round, but I didn’t know what score it was!

“I was just having a good time, just enjoying the day with the guys, it was beautiful weather on a great golf course, it’s pretty hard not to enjoy it.”

Murphy credits a simplistic approach to the round for helping shoot the super low score, but doesn’t rate his chances of repeating the incredible feat again this weekend.

“I didn’t really think about my score at all, it’s just going out there and just, I don’t know, just trying to hit every shot as good as I possibly could each time,” he said. “I reckon back me in for a solid 87 tomorrow when I play.”
