Adam Scott stormed home in the second round of the PGA Tour's CJ Cup in Las Vegas today with a nine-under par round of 63.

The former world number one remarkably shot eight-under par in his closing seven holes to surge up the leaderboard and enter the weekend in a share of second - five shots behind leader Keith Mitchell.

Scott (-13) started the day in solid fashion with a three-under par front nine of 33, but appeared to have undone his initial good work with a pair of bogeys immediately after the turn.

From the twelfth hole onwards, the Queenslander played breathtaking golf to card seven consecutive threes which consisted of two eagles, four birdies and one par.

"I've been playing well and, you know, you can't expect a finish like that, but I'm going to take it. I hit a lot of shots close and that made light work with the putter. You know, kind of put myself in contention," Scott said.

Scott's round full of highlights was capped off by his eagle at the par-5 18th, but both his eagles were special.

"Well, I felt like after the couple bogeys, I needed to just play aggressive and I went driver off the tee at 14, which is maybe unusual to say for a par-5, but a lot of guys are not hitting driver," he said.

"I just thought, well, if I want to have a chance at this tournament, I've got to probably hit one up there. Hit an iron on the green close and make an eagle and that's what I did. I hit a 6-iron in and it rolled down to a couple of feet.

"Then on 18 I hit a poor drive actually, hung it out to the right in a bunker, but I had a good yardage and I had a good lie and I hit a 5-iron, got it online and finished about five feet from the hole, so I can handle those eagle putts."

Heading into the weekend, Scott is excited to see if he can keep the momentum going.

"Yeah, looking forward to the weekend, for sure. Fairly behind the lead, but it seems like if the weather's good, we're just going to have to keep doing more of the same," he said.

"There are a lot of birdies out there. Hopefully I can get it going a bit more on the front nine. A fast start would do the momentum a world of good for the weekend."

Fellow Australian Cam Smith is also well-placed at the Summit Club at 11-under and T8.

Smith backed up his six-under opening round of 66 with a five-under par 67.

"Yeah, it was pretty solid. I think the course got pretty tricky there through the middle, especially those, you know, 9 through 12 gets really tricky. Yeah, played those okay and the rest was pretty good," Smith said.

Australia's number one male golfer made seven birdies in his second round - including four birdies in his last seven holes - with a 42-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th hole the pick of the bunch.

"The wind kind of died down. We switched the other way, we were downwind. And it was pretty stressful there through the middle, so it was nice to play some holes downwind and have some wedges," he said.

After his round, Smith was confident that his consistent approach can lead to a solid weekend.

"There's definitely a score out there, that's for sure. I think my approach has been good, I've just got to hit some irons a little bit closer and I'll try and be up there," he said.
