Min Woo Lee continues Aussie dominance
by Martin Blake
Australian Min Woo Lee has won the Scottish Open in a playoff, earning himself a place in this week's Open Championship.
Lee, just 22 out of Royal Fremantle, shot a final-round 64 to post 18 under and reach a three-way playoff.
Then at the first playoff hole, the 18th on the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, he sunk a birdie putt from just less than three metres for his second European Tour win.
It followed the triumphs of three Australians -- Lucas Herbert, Cam Davis and Steph Kyriacou -- on world tours last weekend.
Lee's European Tour win over Thomas Detry of Belgium and Matt Fitzpatrick of England is the first time since 1991 that two Australians (Craig Parry and Ian Baker-Finch) have won in consecutive weeks on the European Tour.
The Perth star used a rain delay to watch Novak Djokovic's winner's interview at Wimbledon on television for inspiration.
“I was actually watching Wimbledon and it was nice to see Djokovic go in and do his interview. I thought that was a good feeling and I might want to do that," he said.
"It was amazing to hole that last putt. I had good feelings. I had been flushing it all day, as well. There was a bit of a break, but it was quite nice and I got to hit a few balls.
“Looking at it, it’s got to be one of the best rounds I’ve had to play. Definitely top one or two. Probably one. I can look back and say: Good job, I’m proud. You played awesome.”
Six consecutive birdies on the front nine set up Lee's day today after he started three shots back, and he had a putt for the outright win at the 72nd hole that stopped just short. His shot to the green in the playoff was superb; the putt perfect.
He had previously won the ISPS Handa Vic Open on the European Tour in 2020 after a fine amateur career that included a US Junior Amateur.
“We knew the time was coming,” said Lee. “My game was trending a lot leading up to this. “It’s just crazy. I’ve kind of dreamt of it last night and people back home staying up late to watch me, sending messages. This one is for you too.
“I owe it to my family. I owe it to my coach back home. Just my friends and family. I’ve got such good support back home and on social media. I can’t wait to talk to them.”
There will now be 11 Australians in the Open Championship at Royal St George's this week, with last week's winner Lucas Herbert finishing just a shot from the playoff in Scotland as well.
“Hopefully we can keep it going next week,” said Lee. "Hopefully it’s one of us again.
“I’m happy for all those guys and happy for myself and getting the win. Yeah, go Australia.
“I know some of my friends are out there (at Royal St George’s) right now and they have shown it on social media, so I’m excited to go see them.
“I’m confident as ever, and I just want to go out there and play some golf. The ball’s listening to what I do, so hopefully be doing that next week.”
